Meet Neely's Sister, Ava

Article posted on Friday, July, 16th, 2010 at 8:00 am

This is Ava. Jamie and I call her our “miniature 30 year old.” She is only 6, but I think she must have a really old soul.

She is the most caring, compassionate, and intuitive person that I’ve ever known, and I learn something from her everyday. It amazes me that at such a young age, she can be so in touch with what other people are feeling and the impact of her actions on those feelings.

But I also worry about her. Because she is a worrier. (Wonder who she got that from?) As we were watching fireworks over the July 4th holiday, Ava would take notice of every falling spark. If it looked like one might make it to the ground before it had burned out – I would hear her start to whisper, “Go out, Go out, Go out.” followed by a sigh of relief as each spark would finally fade out of sight. She was so worried that something was going to catch on fire.

Ava is a ballerina in every sense of the word. I’m not just talking about the ballet shoes and tu-tus (Although she has plenty of those.) She is graceful, careful, and charming with a smile that can melt your heart. (And a mouth that is often covered in the chocolate that she sneaks from the snack cabinet.)

She is an amazing negotiator, a great reader, a lover of all things Barbie, and a fierce protector of her little sister. When Neely came home form the hospital last summer, Ava wanted Neely to move into her room so she could “keep an eye on her” while they slept. She wanted to go to every doctors appointment and she loved helping Neely re-learn things using the tactics that we learned in therapy sessions. Ava is a great big sister.

She is starting first grade this year. She says she is going to be a doctor when she grows up. I can guess where that inspiration came from. I couldn’t be prouder of the person that she is becoming and can’t wait to see what great things lie ahead for her.
